Escaping fast ion diagnostics for the fast particle transport analysis

Isobe, Mitsutaka*; Shinohara, Koji

Purazuma, Kaku Yugo Gakkai-Shi, 80(12), p.1036 - 1043, 2004/12

Escaping energetic ion diagnostics in magnetically confined plasma experiments are described in this lecture note. Experimental results from escaping energetic ion diagnostics in TFTR, JFT-2M, CHS and W7-AS are shown. In addition to mechanism of energetic ion loss from a viewpoint of particle orbit, effect of MHD activity on energetic particle transport is reviewed.

Energetic particle experiments in JT-60U are summarized, mainly covering ripple loss and Alfven eigenmodes (AE modes). Significant loss was observed for 85 keV NBI ions and fusion-produced tritons increased when toroidal field ripple at the plasma surface, especially in reversed shear plasma. Measurement of hot spots on the first wall due to ripple loss confirmed agreement with code predictions, validating the modeling incorporated in an orbit-following Monte Carlo code. A variety of AE modes were destabilized in ICRF minority heating and negative-ion-based NBI (N-NBI) heating. Most of the observed modes are gap modes identified to be TAE, EAE and NAE. Interesting finding is pulsating modes accompanying frequency sweep, which were destabilized by N-NBI and sometimes induced a beam ion loss of up to 25%. Also presented are energetic particle issues in auxiliary heating with ICRF and N-NBI.

Simulation of $$^{3}$$He minority Ion Cyclotron Range of Frequency (ICRF) Heating in International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER)

$$^{3}$$He minority ICRF Heating in ITER was simulated by the 1.5 D tokamak simulation code PRETOR and ICRF heating simulation code PION. It was found that the best heating efficiency in terms of the fusion power output is achieved with the smallest miority concentration ratio、0.5%, when the fuel dilution effect by the minority ions was taken into account. The overall heating efficiency is insensitive to the location of the resonance layer over a wide range of the minor radius position. Very efficient heating of the ITER plasma with $$^{3}$$He minority ICRF heating by spreading the RF depostion at three resonant locations was demonstarted by the PRETOR/PION simulation. In the Q=10 reference operation regime, ICRF is better than NBI by 8%, better than pure electron heating by 20%. In the low density region, ICRF is better than NBI by 15%, and better than electron heating by 50%.
